Big Battles in 2016 Racketball Club Champs

An enthusiastic bunch of ‘racketballers’ lined up for the 2016 Racketball Club Champs over a warm, late November weekend. The bouncier racketball tends to ‘even out’ traditional squash skills, which means close competition, and that’s exactly what we had.

There were some mammoth battles along the way – Chris ‘Surprise Package’ Lamers taking out Brandon ‘The Bachelor’ Hiini in 5 sets, Scott ‘Fiddler’ Kittelty edging Bruce ‘Snappa’ Doig in a super tight 3, Mark ‘T Man’ Roberts’ in-your-face victory over Andrew ‘Sledge’ Berryman, and in probably the ultimate grudge match, Malcolm ‘Mouth’ Davidson outlasting ‘Fiddler’ Kittelty in 4 sets in the coveted 3rd/4th playoff.

And so to the grand finals…….

Division II saw ‘Surprise Package’ Lamers meet a laser focussed Brendan ‘Big Bear’ Taylor – Brendan’s no-holds-barred power game sneaking him past his more mobile opponent. Entertaining to watch - well done Brendan.

In the Open Division final, reigning top dogs Jared ‘Kickass’ Conning and Matt ‘The Machine’ Taylor put on a racketball masterclass. The tight, pressure packed rallies finally telling on ‘Kickass’ with ‘The Machine’ exacting revenge on last years defeat in a brutal 3-1 marathon.

As always, a fun tournament had by all. A big thanks to ‘Sledge’ Berryman for sponsoring some fantastic prizes and to Club Pres ‘Fiddler’ for making the tournament happen.

Herne Bay kicks off the Racketball Club Champs

We have a growing bunch of racketball regulars at Herne Bay Ponsonby, so it was only right we found out who was best! We had two mixed draws with players from A Grade down to D Grade.

Honours in the top draw went to Jared Conning who outlasted Matt Taylor in a fast-paced 5 setter. Div 2 went to Dave Gregory who outgunned Big Brendan Taylor.

Apart from the highly competitive matches, everyone enjoyed the run-around.

The Open Draw was headed by A1 squash players Chris Lloyd, George Crosby and Matiu Te Kani-McQueen, but the final came down to Matt Taylor and Jared Conning with Taylor taking the new title in a tough 3-0 contest.

In Division One, Paul Gardiner edged Scott Kittelty, with Stuart George beating Peter Masefield for the Division Two honours.
