And now for something completely different: HBPRC members as models for sauna portraiture ...

As you may know, we are very fortunate to have one the best sauna facilities around, and up-and-coming NZ photographer Aaron Burgess has approached us to capture members pre- and post-sauna for a protrait project he's currently working on. Aaron takes some great pics, and is establishing himself as a name in the photography scene, so for those who involve with this project you have the chance of being captured for posterity in a potentially noteworthy artist's portfolio and the opportunity to get a fairly fancy print of yourself to show off to firends and family. If you're intrigued by all this read on for Aaron's pitch:

Sauna photography portrait series

Do you use the sauna for personal, fitness or health benefits?

I am a photographer, working on a personal photography project, based around the effects of sauna use. I’m looking for regular users of the sauna to be a part of this photography series. I am hoping to have a range of people for this project, you don’t need to look like Sharapova or Nadal to participate in this project, as the sauna benefits lots of different people. Herne Bay Ponsonby Rackets Club has kindly given approval for undertaking this project at the club.

My interest in this sauna series evolves from the physical and mental change that can happen to people after they have spent time relaxing in a sauna. Although the high heat in a sauna session speeds up the heart rate, the calm, quiet environment also helps to relax the body and mind.

It is this transformation in body and expression that I am wanting to explore and document with a series of portraits of people that use the sauna. My aim would be to capture this in a portrait immediately before entering the sauna, along with another portrait, exhibiting this calm expression immediately after a person has completed their sauna session. This will be in a set area, outside of the sauna, that management have approved. Each (of the before and after) portrait sessions will only take about 5–10min each.  Although this is a strictly personal series, I would treat this with the professionalism as any other commercial shoot, respecting the members/people that use the facilities and the club.

The outcome of the images would be for my photography portfolio, which is shown on my website, (www.aaronburgess.co), and some of the images to be displayed in a photography exhibition in the near future. Anyone that partakes in the project will be given a printed photo of their portrait, once they have been edited and completed. Hopefully others can also gain something from this series and the benefits sauna provides.

If you are interested to find out more, or would like to be included in this project, please feel free to get in contact with me.

Cheers
aaron
