Cousins Shield National Squash Championships 2015

Queen’s Birthday weekend was very eventful in Whangarei with the Cousins Shield up for grabs, a trophy Herne Bay hasn’t held since 2012.  We were seeded 4th and it all started with a few anxious moments on the court, however the lads dug deep and Bryce Redman was crowned the Player of the Tournament with a win on Friday to seal the victory when we were 2 all with 13th seeds Mangakahia, it shows you that at Cousins you can never get too complacent.

The 2nd round was always going to be tough playing 5th seeds Remuera and again it came down to Bryce at 2 all. He took on Phil Buscke and beat him in a resounding 3-0 victory finishing around 1am Saturday morning! This was a great win as Remuera beat us 2 years ago in the final.

The 3rd round we were  up against Canterbury’s Squashways club - the top seeds, Squashways came out firing and comfortably won the first four matches 3-0 knocking Herne Bay out of the main draw. It wasn’t until the 5th game that Bryce yet again pulled through getting us on the board only to go down in 5 sets but putting up a great fight in the process.

The final round saw us playing off for 3rd and 4th against North Shore. Nathan Stephenson our Aussie import went out there against Chris Binnie their import and proved his ability by beating him in a tight 5 setter. George Crosby then had to beat Paul Tuffin which I’m sure he could do easily if he wasn’t so tired from a few refreshing ales the night before! It was a very tense 4-setter with George pulling through to make it 2-0 to HB. The next game was Chris Lloyd vs Martin Knight which we had written off from the start, though Chris played well and pushed Martin in the 2nd game but lost 3-0. Next was Matt Taylor vs an up-and-coming junior Sion Wiggin. Matt fought hard but youth got through in the end. It’s now 2-2 again with all the pressure on Bryce to beat Gary Duberly, the game was full of nicks and incredible shots and Bryce had 2 match balls in the 4th only to have Gary snatch it from him with his incredible deflection. However in the 5th set Bryce pulled everything out to beat Gary 11-9 to seal the victory for Herne Bay, beating our 4th place seeding and coming 3rd over all which was a fabulous result for the club.

Thanks to all the players and supporters who made their way up for the weekend as it always makes the players lift their game, and a special thanks to Shayne Hubert for contributing to bring our Aussie import over. Next year we hope to put two teams in as Matt Taylor has done a great job recruiting some very good players to ensure we get that Shield back where it belongs at HBPRC!

Reminders:

Bar Volunteers needed

We are looking to fill a couple of nights during the month. The commitment is only one night per month and if you pair up with someone it's only every second month!

This is a great way to 'do your part' for the Club like so many others have before you. If we don't have volunteers the bar is un-manned and this can be a problem when we have visiting teams and events on at the Club, not to mention thirsty members who need a drink!

No experience necessary and all training is provided - plus you get $50 off your membership each year and a few free drinks while you're there! Contact Jacqui in the office if interested.
